Cradled by a dictator, another Pinochet takes first steps to power

DRESSED CASUALLY in a

T-shirt and jeans, he might have been just another customer of the bustling street market in the heart of a well-heeled Santiago suburb.

But everywhere the tall young man wandered, there was a swirl of other shoppers around him and stallholders calling to one another: “There goes Pinochet!”

For years, the name has been one of the most reviled in Latin American politics, thanks to General Augusto Pinochet, the former dictator who saved Chile from communism but became a symbol of human rights abuses and corruption during his two-decade rule.

Now, Rodrigo Garcia Pinochet, a 33-year-old economist and the general’s favourite grandson, is trying to revive his family’s political dynasty by seeking to become an MP in elections being held today.

His candidacy has provoked heated controversy and even the main parties of the Right have shied away from him, fearful that his family name would put voters off – forcing him to run as an independent.

But Mr Garcia Pinochet is not ashamed of his name. He has deployed election posters depicting himself with the figure of his grandfather standing at his shoulder. He is campaigning to represent Las Condes, one of the wealthiest districts of the Chilean capital. Pollsters say he has a good chance of being elected.

Mostly middle-aged and elderly fans gathered around him, some pressing him to autograph copies of his book, Destiny, which he has used to help launch his political career. “See, my grandfather’s legacy is still alive,” he told The Sunday Telegraph. “Thousands came to pay their last respects when he died three years ago. I’m fighting to maintain his name and keep his values alive.”

The return to the political arena by a member of the Pinochet family comes as the Right is poised to retake power in Chile for the first time in 20 years. Its parliamentary candidates are expected to oust the centre-Left Concertacion coalition, led by socialists and Christian Democrats, that has run Chile since democracy was restored in 1990.

Presidential elections also begin today, with a second round on Jan 17, and the Right’s candidate – the billionaire businessman Sebastian Pinera – is the clear front-runner. Mr Pinera, listed in Forbes magazine as Chile’s third-richest person, lost to the current socialist president, Michelle Bachelet, four years ago.

Gen Pinochet’s 17-year military rule still casts a long and painful shadow over Chile. During that period, more than 3,000 people, mostly Leftist activists, disappeared – victims of abduction by Right-wing militias – and countless others were tortured, including Mrs Bachelet, who is stepping down this year.

But asked by The Sunday Telegraph about his grandfather’s alleged actions, Mr Garcia Pinochet ducked the question, insisting that abuses were committed by both sides. A general amnesty should be declared for all those involved on either side, he suggested, so that a line could be drawn under the period.

He recalled how he himself almost became a victim of the violence of that period. As a 10 year-old, he was sitting next to his grandfather in a car when the presidential motorcade was ambushed by Marxist guerrillas in a bloody attack in which five bodyguards died.

“My perspective changed when an M-16 was pointed at my face and I experienced terrorism first hand,” he said. “I never spoke about disappearances with my grandfather but understood the violence in Chile.”

With a touch of bitterness in his voice, he pointed out that the ringleader of that failed assassination attempt on his grandfather had since served a prison term and been freed – but had dismissed the possibility of killing the dictator’s grandson as mere “collateral”

Artists are considered to

Artists are considered to be poorly paid, but with the turnaround in the media and the explosion of dotcom companies, graphic artists are fast becoming hot commodities and are earning big money. Most traditional graphic artists created print products such as packaging, promotional displays, marketing brochures or books, designed logos for products and businesses, or worked on the visual designs of annual reports and other corporate propaganda. However, modern graphic artists are steadily entering into the lucrative and fast-evolving profession of web design to earn quick riches.

According to a 2005 survey by the American Institute of Graphic Artists, entry-level designers at graphic design firms earned a median annual salary of $30,000 and a median total compensation of $32,000, while a print production artist earned $40,000 in median annual pay and total compensation. The Creative Group, a staffing firm in Menlo Park, California, also projected the annual salary ranges for designers for the year 2005. The group calculated the average annual figures for illustrators from $31,000 to $42,000, for graphic designers from $29,000 to $41,000, for production artists between $28,500 to $37,750, and so on.

About 15 of these

About 15 of these mails had absolutely nothing to do with surveys and were simply promoting products. The remaining 5 were surveys but, interestingly, only one or two of these were actually paying any cash, the rest were all paying in the form of vouchers and raffle tickets.

I was in the Paid Online Survey arena for about two weeks and during this time I must have received about 200 emails of which probably only about 40 or 50 were actually surveys and the rest were all, to use the official term – Spam. The consideration offered throughout was once again mainly vouchers and raffle tickets and where cash was being offered, the amount was so small that it was simply not worth the effort. The highest amount I ever came across for a single survey was about $4.

Why not get

Why not get paid for eating out, going shopping, and doing the things you generally love to do? Maybe you’ve heard about the term “mystery shopper” or “secret shopper”. Basically a mystery shopper is one who goes out to eat a restaurant, shops at a particular store, or might try a free sample product. The term “mystery” is driven from the shopper being undercover so that the restaurant or store does not know the person is getting paid to eat or shop. Big name companies or services will pay people to “mystery shop” at a particular store so they can see if their employees will treat the customer as they should.

Your family, work,

Your
family, work, and sleep should be your priorities. Also, you make a schedule to
make your life more fluid so you can get all you need to get done and still have
time for rest. For example, pay your bills online and this alone will save you
many hours over the course of a month. Another tip is when you must do a load of
laundry or go to bed, choose to go to bed and do the laundry tomorrow. It really
can wait. Prioritizing and realizing that sleep is more important than the many
things in your life you put ahead of it will allow you to get more rest, build
more muscle, have more energy, and simply enjoy life.

Aversions are typically

Aversions are typically based on fear of the unknown, unfamiliar, or years of subconscious mechanical thought. Fear plays a big role in issues of low self-esteem. Attachments and aversions are both relative in that what is a good/bad experience or feeling for one may not be so good/bad for another. Any attachment or aversion springs from the imagination and can be construed as clinging, and therefore, in turn, suffering. By practicing detachment to either aversions or attachments, one can see a situation for what it is rather than what it is perceived to be.

Clinging to life or the fear of death is the final hindrance. It is self-preservation and the fundamental will to live in one?s body on this Earth.

And wherever possible,

And wherever possible, work to their schedule. You’re here to help them, not make things harder.

TIP FOR COPYWRITERS: If you?re an advertising copywriter or website copywriter, ask to speak to the Marketing Manager (or if the person who answers the phone says they don’t have a marketing manager, ask for “the person who looks after your advertising & website” – all businesses have that person – it’s generally one of the owners).

4) Always try to get on with the gatekeepers

Receptionists and personal assistants have great influence, and quite often do more of the real work and decision making than the person you?re trying to contact! Make friends with them and you?ve got a foot in the door. (But don?t waste their time or crawl ? they get a lot of that!)

5) Keep it short ?n sweet

When you do get to speak with someone, keep it short ‘n sweet unless they want to talk a lot.

One or two of

One or two of those dumb questions will turn out to be brilliant
ones.

Contrary to expectations, you will find you are accorded loyalty from employees. Other
executives have to work hard to earn this devotion. These employees understand that you
represent their last chance, and that you did not create the problem. They knew that the
business was wobbling off course before the board or owners understood it. With the
right demeanour and without rudeness, the employees will guide you immediately toward
the major problems. Few will hold back if you listen hard. They know that if you really
quiz them and they will lose their jobs anyway, it is less painful for them, since both of
you have tried to salvage the situation.

Turnaround specialists coming from your specific industry are usually quite good. Their
names are familiar in the industry and you can check on the reputation of these specialists. They also probably already know something about your company.

These specialists can make objective decisions that the ailing company?s management
cannot. Some take on full-time positions within the company as the Chief Executive.
